FSI & GLOBALG.A.P. – more about Fleurop AG

Sustainability in the green sector

Since 2018, Fleurop AG has been a member of the international organisations FSI and GLOBALG.A.P. in order to promote the topic of sustainability and anchor it more firmly in the green sector.

Sustainability and Floriculture

The Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) was launched in 2012 and has since focused on finding and supporting socially and environmentally sustainable solutions for the green sector. By the end of 2025, the initiative aims to ensure that 90 per cent of flowers and plants are produced and traded sustainably. To achieve this, members of the initiative are committed to promoting responsibly produced flowers and plants and increasing their share to 90%. To this end, members have access to the "Basket of Standards", which presents 14 standards and models that address the issue of social and environmental sustainability. These are transparent, comparable and assessed for compliance with basic social or environmental requirements using a neutral, independent benchmarking process. The standards include the Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance labels for social sustainability and the EU Green Leaf and GLOBALG.A.P. labels for environmental sustainability.

Global certification

The origins of GLOBALG.A.P. can be traced back to 1997, when EUREPGAP, a retailer initiative, was launched. The organisation was created in response to the growing number of consumers concerned about food safety, environmental protection, animal welfare and worker health and safety. The resulting standards helped producers across Europe to focus on these issues and comply with certain guidelines. The certification scheme also enabled retailers to ensure that their producers were addressing the issue of sustainability. In 2007, the scope of the organisation and its aim to become the definitive standard for good agricultural practice on a global scale led to its renaming as GLOBALG.A.P. The organisation is now active in the aquaculture, livestock and crop sectors, with a particular focus on environmental sustainability. Members of the organisation can access a database of certified producers to ensure that they are buying products from farms and nurseries that meet one of more than 40 standards and programmes.
