At no other time of year do people attach such great importance to atmospheric decorations as in winter and especially during Advent and Christmas. The colours red and green are so popular because they radiate a natural warmth. But you can also make your own four walls really cosy with bright colours and candlelight. Modern Christmas decorations are created when materials and colours complement each other in an atmospheric way so that you immediately feel at home. A festive table decoration can be achieved with cream-coloured mini Christmas stars, wooden coasters and glazed ceramics, for example. The Christmas table can also be decorated with shiny golden cutlery, cones and twigs can always be placed in between as filler elements - they play around the whole and provide a natural touch.

A look at the botany

Poinsettias are native to Central America and Mexico. However, they are now available as cultivated houseplants in many countries around the world during the Advent season - in many languages they are called "Poinsettia". In addition to the classic version in bright red, there are also cultivars with yellow, salmon, cinnamon or apricot-coloured bracts. As poinsettias belong to the spurge family, they release a white secretion when parts of the plant are broken off. Due to the mildly poisonous effect of the plant, it is advisable to always wash your hands after touching parts of the plant and to keep children and pets away from it.

Simple idea, great effect

If you want to try out decorations with light-coloured poinsettias at home, the rule of thumb for a purist, modern look is: less is more. The cream-coloured and white poinsettias look great in simple containers or pots wrapped in greaseproof paper. A simple star, a single Christmas bauble or a beautiful ribbon is often all you need as decoration. Or you can choose the natural, rustic version with cones as a contrast. A particularly harmonious picture is created when the purist arrangement is presented on a separate tray - a quick decoration idea that also goes down well as a gift. For a festive Christmas table, you can simply arrange poinsettias in various shades of white and cream in a wavy pattern in the centre of the table and add a few decorative accents in copper and semi-transparent white. Add matching candles - and you've conjured up a festive, modern atmosphere!
