Make your own Advent calendar
Christmas is one of the best times of the year. Contemplative and full of anticipation. If you want to shorten and sweeten the wait until Christmas for your loved ones, a homemade Advent calendar is just the thing. After all, anticipation is known to be the greatest joy. The basis for this DIY Advent calendar is plain kraft paper bags and the decorations are quick and easy to make. You can use these instructions to make your own Advent calendar, whether for a dear friend, mum, men or children. The recipient can then discover 24 little surprises over 24 days. The homemade Advent calendar is also a wonderful Christmas decoration. We'll show you how you can easily make this original Advent calendar yourself. Of course, you can customise it as you wish and decorate it with photos, for example.
Instructions for hanging advent calendar:
You will need these materials:
- a large fir branch or other branch (as an alternative: round wood from the DIY store)
- 24 kraft paper bags
- Various cotton or jute ribbons
- ruler
- cutter
- Large self-adhesive gold dots
- Permanent marker in white
- various flowers as decoration, e.g. white thistles, wax flowers, small fir branches, gold-coloured eucalyptus capsules --> you can get the flowers from your local florist
- Gold-coloured binding wire
Step 1: Draw the lines
Fold over the kraft paper bags by approx. 5 cm at the open edge. Then use a pencil and ruler to mark two lines that are the same size as the decorative ribbon you want to use, calculated from the centre of the bag width. The distance between the two lines should be approx. 2 cm.
Step 2: Cut slits for the decorative ribbon
Use a ruler and cutter to cut the two lines you drew earlier. Fill the kraft paper bags with the Advent calendar contents.
Tip: further down in the article there are a few suggestions for beautiful Advent calendar contents.
Step 3: Thread the decorative ribbon
Thread the decorative ribbon through the two slits from the back to the front and wrap it around the kraft paper bag once from the bottom.
Step 4: Attach the glue dots
Secure the ribbon with the golden glue dot and seal the bag at the same time.
Step 5: Write the Advent numbers
Use the white permanent marker to write the Advent calendar number on the gold dot and leave to dry a little.
Step 6: Tie mini bouquets
Cut the various flowers and the greenery relatively short and tie them into small bouquets using the binding wire.
Step 7: Attach the bouquets
Tuck the finished small bouquets under the decorative ribbon.
Done!
Hang all the Advent calendar bags in different lengths on a fir branch. Alternatively, you can also hang the bags on a branch in a vase and place a few of the bags in a pretty basket. A simple log decorated with fir trees also makes a nice alternative for a homemade Advent calendar.
