What do women want for Mother's Day?

What women want for Mother's Day is often much more than just a material gift. It's about recognition, appreciation and time for themselves or with their loved ones.

1. appreciation & gratitude

A sincere ‘thank you’

Personal words that show that your efforts are recognised

A letter that says: ‘I see what you do - and I am grateful.’

2. Time instead of stuff

Time with the family - without the stress of everyday life

A day when she doesn't have to organise anything: Sleeping in, breakfast in bed, a relaxing walk

Shared experiences such as going out for dinner, to the cinema or on an excursion

3. something nice just for her

Flowers - preferably with a meaning or in their favourite colour

Wellness & relaxation: bathtub, massage, spa voucher

An afternoon off for a book, a coffee or just some peace and quiet

4. small, thoughtful gifts

Something homemade from the children or your partner

Individual gifts with a personal touch: e.g. an engraved bracelet or a photo book

A gift set that shows: ‘I've put some thought into it.’

5. time for yourself

Many mums want a break from the chaos of everyday life

A few hours without a to-do list, without household chores, just for yourself

A gift can also mean: ‘Today I'll take care of everything - you do what's good for you.’

Mother's Day history

Mother's Day is not an invention of florists, as is often rumoured. Rather, the American Anna Marie Jarvis is considered the initiator. After her mother died on 9 May 1905, Jarvis launched a large-scale initiative with the aim of honouring all mothers with an official holiday. She was successful: in 1908, the first Mother's Day was celebrated at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton (West Virginia). After the corresponding sermon, Anna Jarvis distributed five hundred white and red carnations. The red carnations were to honour the living mothers, the white ones the deceased.

Encouraged by the positive reactions to her work, Jarvis continued to devote all her energy to the Mother's Day idea and wrote letters to high-ranking politicians, clergymen and women's organisations, with the result that by 1909, 45 states in the USA were already celebrating Mother's Day. It was then recognised as a bank holiday in the United States in 1914. The First World War prevented the idea from spreading quickly to Europe, which is why an official Mother's Day was not introduced in Germany until 13 May 1923.

Today, more than 100 years later, Mother's Day has become an integral part of our society. It fulfils a unifying function within the family and is associated with many individual rituals. It seems almost unthinkable to visit your mother on 10 May without presenting her with a flowery gift. If the children are still small, dad should take them to the florist and help them choose. A lovingly selected arrangement will make every mum smile!

Mother's Day around the world: different countries, different traditions

Mother's Day is celebrated in Germany on 11 May - but when and how is it celebrated in other countries?

England

England is not only the motherland of football, afternoon tea and fancy bets - Mother's Day was also invented on the island. Mothering Sunday was celebrated as early as the 13th century as a way of thanking Mother Church and, as a result, thanking one's biological mother. This day was first mentioned in a document in 1644. Over the years, however, this custom fell into oblivion again and was only revived at the beginning of the last century - mothering sunday was given a new lease of life under the influence of Mother's Day in the USA. Since then, mothers in England have also been surprised on Mothering Sunday with flowers, small gifts and home-made crafts. Mothering Sunday is celebrated in the UK on the 4th Sunday of Lent.

In Greece, people have always had a special relationship with the gods. That's why the custom of honouring mothers dates back to ancient times. The "original mother" of the ancient Greeks was the goddess Rhea. She is still worshipped today and the gifts are also very traditional. At dawn, mothers are surprised with flowers and blossoms throughout the house; spring and the mild climate ensure an immense blaze of colour. Honey cake and exquisite drinks are then served. Mothers are the queens on this day! Mother's Day is celebrated in Greece on the second Sunday in May. This year, many mothers around the world will be surprised again on 8 May.

In European eyes, Brazil is a mixture of sugar loaf, rainforest and football. When thinking of Brazilian women, Central Europeans probably think first of the dancers at carnival. However, for most people in Brazil, their mothers are the most important orientation in their lives. Regardless of whether they live in the city or in the countryside, and even though patchwork families are becoming increasingly common and live-in partners are all the rage, mothers are honoured like saints. That is why Mother's Day is more important than Christmas in Brazil. And this is also the day on which the most flowers are sold in the country - on no other day are so many bouquets sold or sent as on the second Sunday in May.

The tradition of honouring mothers is now widespread throughout the world. But when exactly does it happen? When is Mother's Day in other countries? While in Germany, mothers can look forward to flowers on the second Sunday in May, in the Caucasus, for example, it is earlier. But not uniformly - the Georgians celebrate on 3 March, the Armenians celebrate their mothers on 7 April. In Luxembourg, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in June. In Thailand, on the other hand, the day is celebrated on 12 August - conveniently, this is also the Queen's birthday. The Argentinians honour their mothers on the second Sunday in October. At the end of the year are the Indonesians - they celebrate Mother's Day on 22 December.
