Make your own sympathy gift – craft idea
It is not easy to find the right words and gestures when someone is grieving. We have therefore come up with a small gift that you can give to a grieving person for memories and rituals.
There is enough space on our small wooden moulding for a personal mourning card, because support is irreplaceable at this difficult time. There is also space for a picture of the deceased, as sharing memories of the deceased can be very comforting. A beautiful flower and a candle to remind us that our affection and love for the deceased will never fade.
Materials needed:
- Multiplex cut to the desired size from the DIY store (in our case 10 x 23 x 2 cm)
- Wood drill bit with the right diameter for the desired accessories (in our case 16 mm for the test tube and 22 mm for the candle)
- Test tube with a diameter of approx. 15 mm and a length of 16 cm
- Candle nozzles for stick candles with an inner diameter of 22 mm (available from craft centres)
- Beautiful candle
- Grooving saw or router (alternatively, you can also work with a wood saw that is long enough for the wood cut you are using)
- Workbench
- Pencil
Instructions for the mourning gift
Step 1: Mark and drill the drill holes
Mark the drill holes at the front and back at a distance of 2 to 3 cm from the corner and drill with a suitable wood drill. To prevent the underside from "fraying", an old piece of wood can be clamped underneath in the workbench.
Step 2: Sawing the card joint
Mark the future board joint approximately in the centre. Use a grooving saw/moulder or a classic wood saw to cut this to a depth of about 3-5 mm. If you don't have a grooving saw at home, you can also use a normal wood saw with a saw blade long enough for cutting multiplex. Work carefully and slowly, especially at the beginning of the sawing work, as it is easy to slip.
Step 3: Insert the glass tube and candle spout
Finally, insert the glass tube and the candle spout and attach with all-purpose glue if necessary. A candle, flowers and photographs or mourning cards can then be attached to the holder.
Done!
If sawing the groove is too time-consuming or if you don't have the right tools, you can of course also connect two wooden blanks with a sturdy piece of rope on the right and left by wrapping and knotting them together. The mourning card and photos can then be stuck between the connecting ropes. You can also give this small set as a gift together with the condolence card and a bouquet of flowers.
