Who gives who presents on Valentine's Day?

On Valentine's Day, many people give gifts to each other by giving presents to their partners, friends and family members. It's a day to show your love and affection by giving a special gift or otherwise making an effort to make the day special for the other person.

In some cultures it is customary for only women to receive gifts from men, while in other cultures gifts are given by both parties. It is important that everyone follows their own preferences and traditions and does what suits him or her best.

It is also important to note that Valentine's Day is not just for romantic relationships. It's a day to show your affection and love for all the people in your life, including friends and family members. So, if you want to make someone happy on Valentine's Day, remember that it's not necessarily about who is being gifted, but that you've put time and effort into choosing the gift and that it comes from the heart.

Valentine's Day: history and meaning

The day is usually attributed to Bishop Valentine of Terni, who died as a Christian martyr. He was the bishop of the Italian city of Terni (then Interamna) in the third century AD. Despite a ban by Emperor Claudius II, the bishop married many lovers. He also gave the newly married couples flowers from his own garden. According to legend, the marriages he performed were auspicious. On 14 February 269, Valentin was beheaded by order of the emperor.

14 February was also the date of a Roman festival - Lupercalia - a holiday of the Roman goddess Juno, the wife of Jupiter, who was also the patron saint of marriage. Young girls went to the temple of Juno on this day to get a love oracle. Young men drew lots with the names of women who were not yet married. They then went out with the women drawn by lot and some fell in love. Roman husbands gave their wives flowers on this day.

Since the 15th century, lovers in England have given each other flowers, small gifts or poems. The English emigrants took this Valentine's custom with them to the "New World" (USA). And American soldiers brought this custom to Germany after the Second World War. In Japan, women give chocolate to their husbands, colleagues or bosses on this day. A month later, they can expect white chocolate in return. In the Philippines, 5,122 couples set a world record for kissing on 14 February.

On the Baltic island of Usedom, 250 lovers took an ice bath in the Baltic Sea, scattering 2,000 red roses into the sea. In China, this day is becoming increasingly popular, especially among young people who are interested in the Western lifestyle. Find out more about Valentine's Day customs in other countries here.
